Choosing with the long view.
Most decisions are made for the near horizon — this month, this gain, this comfort. A rarer person weighs each choice against something far larger: what this life is for, what lasts beyond it. The renouncer in this verse is defined by exactly that weighing — having measured this birth against release from it before acting.
நெடிய பார்வையோடு தேர்தல்.
பெரும்பாலான முடிவுகள் அருகிலுள்ள எல்லைக்காகவே எடுக்கப்படுகின்றன — இம்மாதம், இந்த ஆதாயம், இந்த சௌகரியம். அரிதான ஒருவர் ஒவ்வொரு தேர்வையும் மிகப் பெரிய ஒன்றோடு எடைபோடுகிறார்: இவ்வாழ்வு எதற்காக, இதற்கு அப்பால் நிலைப்பது எது. இக்குறளில் சொல்லப்படும் துறவி, செயலுக்கு முன் இப்பிறப்பையும் அதிலிருந்து விடுபடுதலையும் எடைபோட்ட அந்தத் தராசினாலேயே வரையறுக்கப்படுகிறார்.
Acting here, not later.
It is easy to defer the deep life — 'after I retire, after the children grow, someday.' The verse praises those who take up their discipline ஈண்டு, here and now, in this very birth. The weighing is not philosophy for its own sake; it issues immediately in how they live.
பின்னல்ல, இங்கேயே செயல்.
ஆழமான வாழ்வைப் பிற்போடுவது எளிது — 'ஓய்வுக்குப் பின், பிள்ளைகள் வளர்ந்த பின், எப்போதாவது.' இப்பிறப்பிலேயே, இங்கேயே (ஈண்டு) தம் ஒழுக்கத்தை மேற்கொள்பவரையே இக்குறள் போற்றுகிறது. அந்த எடைபோடுதல் வெறும் தத்துவம் அன்று; அது உடனடியாக அவர்தம் வாழ்க்கை முறையிலேயே வெளிப்படுகிறது.
The earth lit up by a few.
A handful of people who live by what they have genuinely weighed seem to raise the whole tone of a place. The verse says their greatness makes the earth itself shine. We have all felt it — one steady, clear-eyed person changing the light in a room.
சிலரால் ஒளிரும் உலகு.
தாம் உண்மையாக எடைபோட்டதன்படி வாழும் ஒரு சிலர், ஓர் இடத்தின் முழுத் தன்மையையும் உயர்த்துவது போலத் தோன்றும். அவர்தம் பெருமை உலகையே ஒளிரச் செய்கிறது என்கிறது இக்குறள். ஒரே ஒரு தெளிந்த, உறுதியான மனிதர் ஓர் அறையின் ஒளியையே மாற்றுவதை நாம் எல்லாரும் உணர்ந்திருக்கிறோம்.
Greatness comes from weighing both worlds, then acting now.
Valluvar specifies what makes the renouncer great: not impulse or escape, but a clear weighing of this birth against liberation — and then taking up the discipline in this very life. Those who do so, he says, shine higher than everything else on earth.
Decide by what lasts, and start today.
Bring the long view into ordinary choices — ask not only what helps now but what you'll be glad of at the end. And don't postpone the life you've reasoned your way to; the verse honours those who begin here, now, not 'someday.'
