மற்ற அனைத்தையும் மிஞ்சும் செல்வம்.
ஒரே பதிலைக் கொண்ட ஒரு வினாவை இக்குறள் கேட்கிறது: ஒருவர் பெறக்கூடிய நன்மைகள் அனைத்திலும், கற்பு — உறுதியான, கலங்காத நம்பிக்கையுள்ள நெஞ்சின் திண்மை — கொண்ட மாண்புடைய துணையைவிட மேலானது எது? ஒன்றுமில்லை என்கிறார் பரிமேலழகர்; ஏனெனில் அறவாழ்வுக்கு வேறு எந்த உடைமையும் இத்தனை நம்பகமாக ஆதாரமாக நிற்காது. அதிர்ஷ்டமான வாழ்வு திரட்டக்கூடிய ஒவ்வொரு பொருட்செல்வத்திற்கும் மேலாக உறுதியான நற்குணத்தை இக்குறள் வைக்கிறது.
Kaṟpu as steadfastness, not mere restraint.
Though tradition narrowed kaṟpu to wifely chastity, its root sense in the verse is a 'tiṇmai' — a firmness, an unshakable steadiness of the will. It is faithfulness understood as strength: the integrity that does not waver under temptation or pressure. Read this way, the verse praises a quality available to anyone — the dependable constancy that makes a person, and a partnership, trustworthy through everything.
கற்பு என்பது வெறும் அடக்கம் அல்ல, உறுதியே.

Why steadfastness is the supreme good.
Parimelazhagar's reasoning is that nothing else so surely supports the three great ends of life — virtue, wealth, and well-being — as a steadfast partner. Wealth can be lost, beauty fades, status shifts; but constancy of character holds, and everything good can be built upon it. The verse's logic is that of foundations: the one possession worth ranking first is the one all the others depend on.
உறுதி ஏன் உயர்ந்த நன்மை.
உறுதியான துணையைப் போல வாழ்வின் மூன்று பெரும் நோக்கங்களை — அறம், பொருள், இன்பம் — வேறு எதுவும் அத்தனை நிச்சயமாகத் தாங்காது என்பது பரிமேலழகரின் நியாயம். செல்வம் இழக்கப்படலாம், அழகு மங்கும், அந்தஸ்து மாறும்; ஆனால் நற்குணத்தின் நி லைத்தன்மை நிற்கிறது, அதன்மேல் நல்லவை அனைத்தையும் கட்ட முடியும். இக்குறளின் தர்க்கம் அடித்தளத்தின் தர்க்கம்: முதலிடத்தில் வைக்கத் தகுந்த ஒரே உடைமை, மற்ற அனைத்தும் சார்ந்திருப்பதே.

Treasure constancy above what can be bought.
When you reckon what's truly valuable, rank steadfast character — yours and a partner's — above the things wealth can assemble. Money, looks, and status shift; dependable faithfulness holds, and a sound life is built on it. Cultivate that constancy in yourself, and prize it in those you bind your life to. It is, the verse says, the one treasure that makes all the others worth having.
