The Utterance of Pleasant Words
The tenth chapter of the Kural, 'the speaking of pleasant things.' Placed after hospitality — for a warm welcome begins in warm speech — these verses praise words that are kind, tender, and true. Pleasant words, Valluvar insists, are not flattery: they are blended with genuine affection and free of all deceit, spoken by those who have seen what is right. He ranks a glad face and a kind word above even a generous gift, names humility-with-kind-speech a person's only real ornament, and promises that kind words bring good fortune here and merit hereafter. To deal in harsh words when kind ones are there to be spoken, the chapter ends, is to reach past ripe fruit for the bitter unripe.

செம்பொருள் கண்டார்வாய்ச் சொல்
