Hospitality
The ninth chapter of the Kural, 'the cherishing of guests.' Valluvar makes hospitality the working purpose of domestic life itself: the home is kept, he says, so that guests may be welcomed and the traveller helped. The verses praise the open table and the welcoming face, promise that the household which never fails its guests will not fall into want, warn that to eat alone while a guest waits outside is shameful even if the food were the nectar of immortality, and insist the truest welcome is given with a glad face, not grudging duty. Hospitality is framed as a sacred offering whose reward is measured by the worth of the guest, and meanness toward guests as a poverty worse than having nothing.

இருந்தோம்பி இல்வாழ்வ தெல்லாம் விருந்தோம்பி
வேளாண்மை செய்தற் பொருட்டு
“All household cares and course of daily life have this in view; Guests to receive with courtesy, and kindly acts to do.”
விருந்து புறத்ததாத் தானுண்டல் சாவா
